The microclusters of VLC / CAMPUS: Biotechnology and Biomedicine with yeasts model, Integrative Evolutionary Biology and Quality, Safety and Functionality of Food collaborate in the joint seminar “THE TOMATO GENOME”, organized by the IATA (Institut d’Agroquímica i Tecnologia dels Aliments, Institute of agrochemical and food technology ) and ICBiBE (Institut Cavanilles de Biodiversitat i Biologia Evolutiva, Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology).

The sequence of the tomato genome is key to understanding the domestication and adaptation of this and other Solanaceae to the diversity of environments that they inhabit. We trust it will also show us how to produce better quality tomatoes, more resistant to environmental stresses. The modern improvement meets the needs of different producers who do not necessarily have the same interests. In this seminar I will offer a general description of the genome and compare it with that of its closest wild relative. I will also discuss an example of the use of this information to identify the uniform ripening mutation which was introduced into modern varieties and perhaps, as we learned in this case, which not everyone likes.
